In the first five months of 2022, the export volume of Vietnamese tuna to Chile exceeded US $4million, an increase of nearly 59%over the same period in 2021. In some months, the export volume even achieved a triple-digit growth.

Vietnam mainly exports frozen tuna meat and loin to Chile, accounting for 87%of tuna exports.

According to the statistics of the United States International Trade Center (ITC), Chile purchased more than 17000 tons of tuna in the first four months of 2022, with a value of more than US $39 million. The number increased by 5%year-on-year and the value increased by 22%. Tuna in Chile market mainly comes from Ecuador, Thailand and Vietnam.

Ecuador has successfully expanded its business in Chile this year, and its market share in Chile has increased from 21%in the first four months of 2021 to more than 42%in the same period this year, while the decrease in the market share of Thai tuna in Chile has created opportunities for Vietnam to expand the Chilean market.

The cptpp agreement continues to promote the achievements of Vietnam’s tuna export trade to Chile. However, against the background of the current rise in ocean shipping prices, the competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises in terms of price and delivery time has declined, which is expected to slow Vietnam’s tuna export to Chile.
