Turkey releases guidelines for safety assessment and health claims management of new food ingredients

On July 19, 2022, the website of the General Administration of food safety and control of the Ministry of agriculture, forestry and Fisheries of Turkey released Announcement No. 477, namely, the guidelines for the management of safety assessment and health claims of new food ingredients. The main contents include:(1) the general principles, assessment institutions, application procedures, safety documents and scientific data to be provided, assessment methods and verification procedures of the safety assessment of substances applied for new food ingredients; (2) The types of health claims that substances approved as new food ingredients are allowed to be used conditionally, specifically including antioxidant, improving immune function, improving appetite or weight control, maintaining bone, nerve, muscle and skin health, and improving nervous system function. The Guidelines shall enter into force as of the date of publication of the official gazette.
