Portuguese newspaper publica reported on July 8 that due to the continuous drought, the European Commission predicted that the European food production in 2022/23 would reach 286.4 million tons, a decrease of 2.5%over 2021. However, the output of cash crops for oil extraction (sunflower seeds, rapeseed, soybeans, etc.) will increase by 6.9%, exceeding 32.1 million tons for the first time since 2017. Only the output of sunflower seeds will reach a record 11.1 million tons, and the output of sunflower oil will reach 4.3 million tons, a record high. The European Commission said that as the initial grain inventory increased by 20%, offsetting the decline in production, European grain production this year can meet consumer demand.
