The forage germplasm resources team identified the key genes of Alfalfa GRF family

Recently, the scientific and technological innovation team for the protection and utilization of forage germplasm resources at the Beijing Institute of animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, identified and screened the genes of the important growth regulator (GRF) family related to abiotic stress in alfalfa, a major leguminous forage, providing an important reference for the genetic improvement of forage stress resistance. Relevant research results were published in the International Journal of Molecular Science (InternatioNal Journal of Molecular Sciences).
 
GRF is a plant specific transcription factor, which plays an important role in plant growth and development and stress resistance. For the first time, researchers have attempted to conduct a comprehensive and systematic study of GRF genes in the above two plants by comparing and analyzing the family genes of Alfalfa Tribulus terrestris and alfalfa, a forage crop.
 
Researchers identified eight GRF genes in the genomes of Medicago terrestris and Medicago sativa, and found that these GRF genes mostly exist in the nucleus, containing common protein conservative functional domains, and the promoter region of GRF gene contains multiple cis acting elements related to stress and hormones. Transcription level analysis showed that GRF gene was differentially expressed in many different tissues, and its expression level was affected by a variety of abiotic stresses and hormones. The expression levels of some genes were significantly up-regulated under salt and drought treatment. These genes can be used as key candidate genes for stress resistance breeding of Alfalfa for in-depth functional analysis.
