Peru plans to revise the law on healthy diet for children and adolescents

On July 19, 2022, the Ministry of health of Peru issued ministerial Resolution No. 526-2022-minsa to amend the law on promoting healthy diet for children and adolescents, with a feedback period of 90 days. The main revisions are:(1) revise the definition of sugar. Sugar includes monosaccharide (glucose, fructose, galactose), disaccharide (sucrose, maltose or lactose), refined sucrose, beet sugar, naturally occurring honey, syrup, etc; (2) Processed cereal baby foods for breast milk substitutes and for children under 2 years of age are included in the scope of regulation of the law; (3) Exceptions. It is not applicable to foods and non-alcoholic beverages that are in a natural state and have not been processed industrially; (3) The technical standards of sugar, sodium and saturated fat in processed food are added as shown in the table below; (5) Label advertising requirements. Beverages containing calorie free sweeteners should not be declared to children, warning labels should not be used on the front of the packaging, and breast milk substitutes should not be publicized to the public.
