Japan revises the production quality and labeling standards of sake

On July 19, 2022, the Internal Revenue Service of Japan issued Notice No. 30 to revise the production quality and labeling standards of sake. The main amendments are as follows:(1) the relevant marking requirements of the manufacturing date are deleted from the mandatory marking information of sake labels, and it is included in the optional marking information, and it is stipulated that the sealing or filling date should be marked after the manufacturing date on the sake container or packaging label for direct sale; (2) Delete the relevant marking provisions for products to win awards in the selective marking information; (3) It is forbidden to add misleading words such as”official recommendation” or”winning official awards” to the marked information. The amendment will be introduced and applied to the”alcohol tax law and alcohol management related laws and regulations (legal interpretation notice)” at the same time, and will take effect on January 1, 2023.
