Import and export of canned pet food in China in the first half of 2022
By: Date: 2022-07-26 Categories: industrynews Tags: ,
The export market of canned pet food in China is mainly Asian market. From January to June 2022, the canned pet food market in Asia and other countries has a strong demand for Chinese products, and more and more countries have increased the import of canned pet food in China. However, affected by the COVID-19, the war between Russia and Ukraine, the escalation of inflation, the shortage of meat products in Europe, food safety, the global economic slowdown and other factors, the overseas canned food production fell more seriously, which could not meet the market demand of Asia and the Americas. Therefore, Chinese products filled some market vacancies in Central Asia and the Americas, and China’s market demand for overseas canned food also decreased to a certain extent.

Export overview and products

According to the data of the General Administration of customs, from January to June 2022, the cumulative export volume of canned pet food products in China was US $24.05 million, the export volume was 12500 tons, and the cumulative average unit price was US $1930.70/ton. Compared with the same period last year, the quantity increased by 39.30%, the amount increased by 39.48%, and the average price remained stable. Major overseas countries are affected by the epidemic and avian influenza, and at the same time rely on domestic enterprises to cultivate export OEM and independent brands. The demand for canned pet food in China has increased significantly in the overseas market.

 Export market conditions

From January to June 2022, China’s exports of canned pet food to the global market increased year-on-year, from 26 countries and regions in 2021 to 31 countries and regions. Among the 31 countries and regions, the top three countries are Indonesia, Japan and South Korea, followed by Chile, the Philippines, Germany, Malaysia, Turkey, Israel and the Russian Federation. In the first half of 2022, China’s exports to Indonesia achieved rapid growth. It is worth noting that from January to June 2022, exports were not exported to Ukraine, Nigeria and Brazil, the three countries with higher export quotas in the same period last year, while from January to June 2022, exports from Australia, Britain, Singapore, France, India, Romania, Vietnam and Italy were increased. It shows that the frequent epidemic, the Russian Ukrainian war, terrorist attacks in some regions, extremist organizations and instability at home and abroad have a great impact on Ukraine, Nigeria and Brazil, affecting the normal people’s livelihood, so that China’s pet food cans were not imported in the first half of this year, and China’s pet can production enterprises are also actively exploring other international markets to increase market sales.

From January to June 2022, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea are still the top three export markets of canned pet food in China.

The export volume of China to Indonesia was US $5.827 million, with a year-on-year increase of 46.30%, accounting for 24.22%of China’s industrial export volume. The export volume was 4659 tons, with a year-on-year increase of 126.7%, accounting for 37.40%of China’s industrial export volume. The cumulative average price was us $1250.71/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 8.64%. The Indonesian market achieved rapid growth in the first half of this year.

China’s exports to Japan amounted to US $5.498 million, a year-on-year decrease of 11.61%, accounting for 22.86%of China’s industrial exports. The export volume was 3629 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 20.33%, accounting for 29.13%of China’s industrial exports. The cumulative average price was US $1514.90/ton, a year-on-year increase of 10.95%.

South Korea is currently China’s third largest export market. China’s exports to South Korea amounted to US $5.164 million, with a year-on-year increase of 13.43%, accounting for 21.47%of China’s industrial exports. The export volume was 1201 tons, with a year-on-year increase of 0.83%, basically stable, accounting for 9.64%of China’s industrial exports. The cumulative average price was US $4299.32/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 12.49%. In particular, the cumulative average price of South Korea is basically 2-3 times that of other countries and regions, and the export volume of South Korea can remain stable, indicating that there is a market that can accept a higher average price and the quality of China’s products exported to South Korea is high.

In addition, from January to June 2022, China’s exports to Chile, the Philippines, Malaysia, Turkey, Israel, the Russian Federation and other markets increased significantly year-on-year, and the rest of the countries with small export volume were also growing rapidly or maintaining stability. Indonesia, Japan and South Korea account for a relatively balanced proportion of exports, but the three account for 68.55%of exports, indicating that China’s exports are mainly in Asian countries. Through the increase of Indonesia’s export volume, export volume and export countries, China’s exports of canned pet food products can continue to grow rapidly. However, the import of canned pet food from countries and regions affected by frequent outbreaks, the war between Russia and Ukraine, terrorist attacks, extremist organizations and instability at home and abroad fell sharply, such as Panama, Peru, Hong Kong, China and Kenya. This polarization is alarming.

 Export provinces and analysis

According to the data of the General Administration of customs, from January to June 2022, China’s canned pet food products were exported from eight provinces, including Hebei Province, Liaoning Province, Jiangsu Province, Fujian Province, Shandong Province, Henan Province, Hubei Province and Guangdong Province. From January to June 2021, China’s canned pet food products were exported from eight provinces, including Liaoning Province, Shanghai, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Jiangxi Province, Shandong Province and Guangdong Province. Among them, Shanghai, Zhejiang Province, Jiangxi Province and Hainan province did not export in the first half of this year, but Hebei Province, Fujian Province, Henan Province and Hubei Province added a small amount of canned pet food products.

It can be seen from the table below that the export volume of Shandong Province is 10645 tons, accounting for 86.61%of the total export volume of canned pet food in China, with an amount of US $20.83 million and an average price of US $1957/ton, with a year-on-year increase of 32.70%, an increase of 37.24%in export volume and an average price increase of 3.42%, basically maintaining stability. Other provinces account for a relatively small proportion, and the export provinces change greatly.

 Import profile

According to the latest data of the customs, from January to June 2022, the cumulative import volume of canned pet food products in China was US $61.215 million, an increase of 3.54%year-on-year, the import volume was 9857 tons, a decrease of 11.16%year-on-year, and the cumulative average import price was US $6210/ton, an increase of 16.54%year-on-year. Limited by international relations, trade war, the epidemic superimposed on the war between Russia and Ukraine, the European meat supply is in short supply, the price rises, the Canadian avian influenza has not been solved, the canned food production has declined seriously, the number of overseas white list factories has decreased, and the customs clearance is difficult, resulting in the decline in the import volume of canned pet food and the increase in the import volume.

In addition, it is worth noting that the import price of canned pet food products (US $6210/ton) is 3.22 times the export price (US $1930.70/ton). With the gradual increase of domestic pet breeders, the brands of canned pet food continue to emerge, and the competition pattern of domestic pet food is relatively scattered. This year, after the food safety problems of well-known overseas brands of cat and dog food, coupled with the reduction of production and the difficulty of customs clearance, domestic consumers will seek the replacement of domestic brands. For foreign consumers, with the epidemic income crisis and inflation crisis further expanding, the demand for canned pet food in China will be increasing.
