Russian crabs were introduced to the U.S. market in the early 1980s to cooperate and sell with Alaskan producers. With the reduction of Alaskan crab resources, Russian crabs have become the most important resources in the U.S. market. As of May, the supply of Russian emperor crabs to the United States was 1930 pounds, while the supply of snow crabs was 440 pounds.
According to the U.S. NOAA data, the U.S. imported 2570 pounds of Canadian snow crabs in May this year, an increase of 110%month on month. Compared with 2021, the market demand is still bleak, and the price of some snow crabs has even fallen by 50%. However, it is clear that Canadian snow crabs will be the main source of supply for the U.S. market.
Russia:at present, Russia has 94%of the quota of red king crab, 100%of the quota of Blue King Crab, and equally shares the quota of Golden King Crab with Alaska. Russia also produces more than 30%of the world’s gray eyed snow crab and 100%of the deep-sea snow crab.
Russian crab processors have shifted their attention from the United States to Asia and other open markets. The sales of live and frozen crab markets in China and South Korea grew well in 2022, and are expected to expand to other Asian markets and the European Union.
Last week, a batch of live crabs were shipped to South Korea and China, with a total of about 711 tons. Among them, the number of gray eye snow crabs was the largest, with 430 tons, 217 tons of live blue king crabs, and 26 tons of king crab were exported to China.
The quota of Barents Sea snow crab in 2022 is 16885 tons, which has been completed. The Red Emperor crab fishing season is currently planned to open in September, with a quota of 12690 tons.
Norway:in 2022, the quota of red king crab is 1845 tons, and the quota of snow crab is 6725 tons.
In the first half of this year, the export volume of Norwegian king crab decreased by 46%to 609 tons. Due to the rise in prices, the export volume decreased by only 8%. The United States, the Netherlands and South Korea were the largest export markets in the first half of this year. Due to the strong demand of the catering industry, the export of Norwegian king crab to the United States increased by 166%.
In the first half of 2022, the export volume of Norwegian snow crab was 3000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 14%. Denmark, Japan and the United States were the largest export markets. In June, the monthly export volume was 506 tons, a decrease of 42%, and the export volume decreased by 54%.
Canada:the increase of Canadian crab fishing quotas and the changing world market have brought major challenges to producers in 2022. Facing the high cost supply chain, carry forward inventory prices and sales are facing strong resistance. According to the import data of the United States in the past five years, the supply of Canadian snow crabs to the United States is usually in spring and summer, followed by the supply of Russian snow crabs in the second half of the year, most of which arrive in the U.S. market after June.
This year, the restriction order of the United States has reduced the supply of crabs in Russia by 90%, which should have meant that it is conducive to the Canadian market environment. However, this year is not a normal year. Inflation, rising interest rates, and consumers’ shopping habits have affected the sales of crabs. Considering the economic and inflationary challenges of the United States, the price of snow crabs in Canada may be lower than expected.
