ANZ plans to revise the maximum usage of phytosterols as substitutes for vegetable milk

On July 12, 2022, the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards Agency (FSANZ) issued notice a1249, which proposed to add phytosterols, phytostanols or their esters (phytosterols) as new foods to plant milk substitutes, with a maximum of 2.2g per 250ml. The purpose of the requested amendment is to improve public health by providing alternative sources of phytosterols in the food supply to consumers seeking to reduce blood cholesterol. The feedback period of the announcement is up to August 12, 2022.
