According to Taiwanese media news, agricultural product export statistics show that in the first half of 2021, Taiwan’s agricultural product exports totaled 1.098 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.5%, and the total value exceeded US$2.78 billion. Among them, the total value of fresh fruit exports was approximately US$130 million, a slight increase of 0.6%year-on-year.
The mainland (including Hong Kong) is still the largest export market for Taiwan’s fruits. From January to June, Taiwan’s exports of fresh fruits to the mainland (including Hong Kong) amounted to US$84.29 million, accounting for about 65%of the total fresh fruit exports. Among them, total exports to the mainland dropped by 30.8%year-on-year, and exports to Hong Kong increased by 81.2%.
Effective March 1, 2021, the General Administration of Customs will suspend the import of Taiwanese pineapples into the mainland. From the data point of view, in the first half of 2020, the value of pineapple exports to the mainland accounted for 90%, and in the first half of 2021, only 14%remained, which affected the performance of pineapple exports by 30%. Other fruits such as lotus mist, mango, citrus, etc. have also been affected, and exports have all fallen sharply.
Affected by this, Taiwan’s fresh fruit exports began to diversify to other markets. From January to June, Taiwan’s exports to Japan totaled US$31.03 million, an increase of 173.1%year-on-year. Exports to South Korea are 4.16 million U.S. dollars, Singapore is 3.85 million U.S. dollars, and the United States is 1.08 million U.S. dollars.
