Hong Kong Food Safety Center:Imports of poultry meat and poultry products in parts of Denmark and Poland suspended

   The Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department’s Food Safety Center (Centre) announced on March 9 that in response to a notification from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, it pointed out the outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in Ringsted, Denmark, and the Polish Veterinary Inspection Service The notification refers to Lodz Province, PolandThe outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Łeczycki district and Nowosolski district in Lubska province immediately instructed the industry to suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products (including poultry eggs) from these areas to protect Hong Kong Public health.
  A spokesperson for the center said that according to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 1,640 metric tons of chilled and frozen poultry meat and about 1.33 million poultry eggs from Denmark last year; and imported from Poland. Approximately 13,500 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and approximately 39.08 million poultry eggs.
   spokesperson said:”The center has contacted the Danish and Polish authorities regarding the incident, and will continue to closely monitor the news of the outbreak of avian influenza from the World Organisation for Animal Health and relevant authorities, and take appropriate actions in response to the development of the local epidemic.”
