On March 4-5, the 31st session of the FAO Intergovernmental Group on Oilseeds, Oils and Fats was held online. The conference was hosted by the Indonesian government. Representatives from 66 FAO member countries and 3 international organizations attended the conference. The Permanent Representative Office of China to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization sent representatives to the conference.
The Intergovernmental Group on Oilseeds, Oils and Fats is a subordinate body of the FAO Commodity Issues Committee (“Commodity Committee”). It was established by the Commodity Committee in 1965, mainly for Provide a forum for research and consultation on the economic aspects of the production, processing, consumption, and trade of oilseeds, oils and fats, with special attention to the problems of developing countries. The 30th session of the group was held in Chile in November 2009. This meeting mainly discussed recent market and policy developments, as well as the”Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Vegetable Oils” proposed by Indonesia.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to the production of oilseeds. At the same time, it has taken various measures to develop the cultivation of oilseed crops such as rape and peanuts. According to statistics from the Chinese Customs Department, China imports 110 million tons of edible oilseeds in 2020, of which soybean imports exceed 100 million tons and rapeseed imports exceed 3.1 million tons. Edible vegetable oil imports 11.7 million tons, of which palm oil imports nearly 6.5 million tons.
