Can artificial intelligence improve food safety?

  From The Fish Site news on March 17, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched the second phase of a new project, which is testing how to use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the safety of imported seafood.

   The pilot program aims to strengthen and improve the ability to effectively identify imported seafood that may pose a threat to public health. This is especially important because more than 94%of the seafood in the United States is imported.
   In 2019, the FDA launched the first phase of the pilot, that is, proof of concept analysis, through machine learning about the transportation of illegal seafood. Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that can quickly analyze data and automatically identify connections and patterns in the data, which people and even institutions cannot see in the current rule-based screening system. The analysis shows that artificial intelligence has the potential to assist the FDA in ensuring the safety of the country’s food supply, especially imported seafood.
   As part of the FDA’s “Smarter Food Safety New Era” initiative, AI-based technologies are used to evaluate the effectiveness of artificial intelligence in supporting import goals. This may ultimately help to achieve a targeted Artificial intelligence model for high-risk seafood products.
   The FDA plans to launch from February 1 to July 31. The new pilot program will help the Agency not only gain valuable experience in new technologies supported by powerful artificial intelligence, but also increase the use of Tools to comply with regulatory requirements and accelerate detection of public health threats.
  After the trial is completed, the FDA will report its findings, increase transparency, and promote dialogue on how to use new and emerging technologies to solve complex public health challenges.
