Yonhap News Agency, Seoul, February 8. According to data released by the Korean Customs Service (Customs) and the food industry on the 8th, the export volume of Korean kimchi in 2020 increased by 37.6%year-on-year to US$144.5 million, a record high.
Kimchi is sold to more than 80 countries and regions around the world. Exports to Japan amounted to USD 71.1 million, accounting for 49.2%of total exports. This was followed by exports to the United States for 23.06 million U.S. dollars, to Hong Kong for 7.76 million U.S. dollars, to Taiwan for 5.87 million U.S. dollars, to Australia for 5.64 million U.S. dollars, and to the Netherlands for 5.15 million U.S. dollars. In addition, kimchi is also sold to Uruguay ($1.06 million), the UAE ($730,000), Qatar ($230,000), and the Northern Mariana Islands ($130,000).
Analysis believes that under the circumstance that the new crown epidemic is raging around the world, fermented foods such as kimchi are considered to be beneficial to enhance immunity, which promotes the increase in kimchi exports.
During the same period, the import value of kimchi was USD 15243 million, an increase of 16.4%year-on-year. The kimchi trade deficit was US$7.91 million, a record low since 2012. (End)
