Hong Kong Food Safety Center:Imports of poultry meat and poultry products suspended in parts of Germany and Sweden

   The Food Safety Center (Center) of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on February 5 that in response to a report from the World Organisation for Animal Health, it pointed out that the highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza had occurred in Ukmark County, Brandenburg, Germany, and the Swedish Agriculture Bureau The notification refers to the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in M?nster?s City, Kalmar Province, Sweden. The center immediately instructed the industry to suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products from Ukmark County and Oskarshamn, which is adjacent to M?nster?s City ( Including poultry eggs) to protect the health of the public in Hong Kong.
  A spokesperson for the center said that according to the statistics of the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 3,900 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 1.41 million poultry eggs from Germany last year, and about 1,500 from Sweden.    spokesperson said:”The center has contacted the German and Swedish authorities regarding the incident, and will continue to closely monitor the news of the outbreak of avian influenza from the World Organization for Animal Health and relevant authorities, and take appropriate actions in response to the development of the local epidemic.”
