From FiS news on January 8th, in 2020, the export volume of Norwegian herring was 316,000 tons, the export value was 3.8 billion Norwegian kroner, the export volume decreased by 11%year-on-year, and the export value increased by 590 million Norwegian kroner, an increase of 18%.
Germany is the main export area of Norwegian herring. In recent years, exports to Germany have shown a downward trend. However, after the outbreak, the demand for canned herring in the German market has soared. Last year, herring consumption in Germany increased by 10%.
Poland is the second largest consumer market for Norwegian herring. Similarly, the increase in demand has prompted Norway to shift from exporting whole frozen herring to higher-value herring fillets and processed products.
The export volume of Norwegian herring roe in 2020 increased by 53%compared to 2019, and the export price increased by 73%, bringing the export volume to 430 million Norwegian kroner.
