Hong Kong Food Safety Center:Imports of poultry meat and poultry products suspended in parts of South Korea and Ukraine

   The Food Safety Center (Center) of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on December 31, 2020 that in response to a notification from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock and Food of Korea, referring to Pyeongtaek City and Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, South Jeollabuk-do Highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza broke out in Iksan City and Nonsan City, Chungcheongnam-do; and the World Organization for Animal Health notified the outbreak of highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza in Kherson, Ukraine. The center immediately instructed the industry to suspend imports of poultry from these areas Meat and poultry products (including poultry eggs) to protect Hong Kong’s public health.
  A spokesperson for the center said that according to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 740 metric tons of chilled and frozen poultry meat and about 8.9 million poultry eggs from South Korea in the first nine months of this year; and from Ukraine Imported about 2160 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 66.6 million poultry eggs.
   spokesperson said:”The center has contacted South Korean and Ukrainian authorities regarding the incident, and will continue to closely monitor the news of the outbreak of bird flu from the World Organisation for Animal Health and relevant authorities, and take appropriate actions in response to the development of the local epidemic.”
