According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), on January 8, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania notified OIE that an outbreak of H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza occurred in Lithuania.
The place where the epidemic occurred was Kaunas, which was confirmed on January 8, 2021. The source of the epidemic was exposure to wild species. Clinical and laboratory tests revealed that 27 poultry were suspected of being infected, 22 of which became ill and died, and 5 were killed and disposed of.
The epidemic is not over yet, and the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania will submit a follow-up report every week.
