   Can help the body lose weight while sleeping? This should be dreaming!

Recently, in a study published in”Nutrients”, a research team led by the University of Tsukuba in Japan found that drinking oolong tea seems to help our dreams come true. The research was funded by the Japan Association for the Advancement of Science (non-tea merchants).

  Although all tea leaves come from the same plant-tea tree, the variety of tea is determined by the degree of oxidation. For example, green tea is not oxidized, and its taste is relatively mild; while the unique color of black tea comes from the process of complete oxidation; Oolong tea is between green tea and black tea but is only partially oxidized. It has the characteristics of both green tea and black tea. In the biological oxidation process of endogenous enzymatic reactions, catechins are converted into tea polyphenols, and caffeine is slightly decomposed. These changes may have an impact on a variety of human physiological functions.
  Green tea is praised for its health benefits and has been extensively studied. What about oolong tea?
  Like all teas, today’s protagonist Oolong tea also contains caffeine. Studies have shown that it can affect energy metabolism by speeding up the heart rate. Other studies have shown that Oolong tea may also increase fat breakdown, which is related to caffeine. The role is irrelevant.
   In order to gain insight into the effects of oolong tea and single caffeine on human energy and fat metabolism, the research team designed a placebo-controlled/double-blind/cross-over intervention trial involving 12 male health volunteers aged 20 to 56 (Excluding excessive BMI, food allergies, smoking, chronic diseases, frequent use of drugs and dietary supplements, night shift workers or travel across time zones within 1 month, daily caffeine intake exceeding 300 mg, and sleep problems ) Join the group. They were divided into three groups, namely:caffeine-containing oolong tea group, caffeine group and placebo group. All three beverages are packed in 350ml beverage cans.

   In the 14-day trial, the subjects drank two cans of test beverages (350ml/can; one can for breakfast and one can for lunch):oolong tea, caffeine or placebo. During this period, other caffeinated beverages (such as coffee and tea) or alcohol cannot be consumed. The cleansing period between two courses of treatment is at least 14 days. During the experiment, the subjects maintained their daily activities and eating habits.
   After the trial, the researchers found that compared with placebo, the fat breakdown of the oolong tea and caffeine groups increased by about 20%. It is worth mentioning that during sleep, the respiratory quotient (RQ) of the subjects in the oolong tea group was significantly lower than that in the caffeine group, which means that oolong tea still plays a role in fat oxidation during sleep. Interestingly, neither of these two groups caused an increase in energy expenditure, indicating that the volunteers developed tolerance to the stimulating effects of caffeine during the 14-day trial.

   It is well known that lack of sleep can affect energy metabolism, and caffeine intake can also affect sleep. For this reason, researchers studied the sleep patterns of volunteers. It is worth noting that there is no significant difference in sleep patterns or time to fall asleep between the treatment group and the placebo group, which indicates that drinking oolong tea is unlikely to prevent you from getting a good sleep.

   The corresponding author of the study, Professor Kumpei Tokuyama of the International Institute of Comprehensive Sleep Medicine at the University of Tsukuba, said:”The answer is possible. The stimulating effect of oolong tea on fat breakdown during sleep may have practical clinical significance for weight control. However, we need To determine whether the effects we observed in the two-week study can be translated into actual body fat reduction over a longer period of time.
